Our partner dairy farms are located in Del Norte and Humboldt counties of Northern California - the region we call The Redwood Coast.

Our partner farms are mid-sized, with an average of around 300 cows per farm. Across all farms, there’s an average of roughly 2 acres of pasture available per cow. Many farms use rotational grazing practices to make the most of their pastures while supporting healthy herds.

This thoughtful approach to pasture management promotes sustainability and effective land stewardship. By collaborating with farms that prioritize these practices and high-quality milk production, we deliver milk that embodies these shared values.

Our partner dairies provide their cows with year-round access to lush, green pastures. While the cows always have the freedom to graze, they aren’t 100% grass-fed because their diets are carefully balanced to meet their nutritional needs and ensure their overall health and well-being.

Grass is an important part of their diet, but it doesn’t always provide all the nutrients cows need to stay healthy and produce high-quality milk year-round. For example, during winter or when grass growth slows, cows may require extra energy, protein, and minerals to maintain their health and milk production. That’s why their diets are occasionally supplemented with organic, non-GMO feeds like pasture silage (often harvested from their own fields) or alfalfa. When cows are milked, they also receive a feed ration tailored to their individual health and nutritional needs.

All feed provided is certified organic and non-GMO, ensuring the highest standards for the cows and the milk they produce. By combining access to fresh pasture with balanced nutrition, we ensure that the cows remain healthy and happy while producing exceptional-quality milk.

The yellow color of Rumiano Organic cheeses and butters comes from a natural source – beta-carotene! This red-orange pigment is found in the grass that our cows graze on. As the cows metabolize beta-carotene, it binds to fat and is transferred to their milk, giving our products their rich, golden hue. It’s just another reflection of the wholesome, pasture-raised goodness that goes into every bite and spread!

No. All of the ingredients we use, including cheese cultures and enzymes, are verified Non-GMO through FoodChain ID and the Non-GMO Project.

We do not use Chymosin (or Chymax) as it is not allowed in Organic cheese production, and is on the National Organic Program prohibited substance list as being genetically modified.

Additionally, all of our ingredients must go through FoodChain ID evaluation in order for our products to be Non-GMO Project Verified.

Yes, Rumiano cheeses are vegetarian-friendly! We use microbial rennet in our cheese-making process, which is a plant-based alternative to animal rennet. This ensures that our cheeses can be enjoyed by vegetarians while still delivering the rich, delicious flavors you love. You can feel confident that our commitment to quality extends to meeting the needs of all our cheese lovers!

Our packaging is thoughtfully designed to keep your cheese fresh for longer! Here’s why we’ve chosen these materials and what they’re made of:

• Oriented Nylon – A sturdy layer that keeps your cheese safe and well-protected.
• EVOH (ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer) – This acts as a strong barrier against oxygen, helping to preserve flavor and extend shelf life.
• Proprietary Polyethylene Coextrusion – This customized material ensures a secure seal, locking in all the delicious freshness.

We’ve explored numerous packaging options, including recyclable and compostable materials, but we discovered that these cut shelf life in half, which ends up increasing food waste. Extending shelf life is essential to preventing waste, and we’re working hard to strike the right balance.

That said, we’re always looking for new ways to reduce our use of plastic and lessen our impact.
