The Rumiano Cheese Company is committed to sustainability, supporting the local community with a quality workplace and an environmentally friendly operation.

Wastewater Treatment Facility

In February 2005, we built a state of the art wastewater treatment facility to reduce our total solid loadings on the city and allow further growth in the community in the form of more sewer hookups. The Rumiano wastewater treatment facility biologically treats approximately 20,000 gallons per day of cheese production wash water decreasing the company’s solid loadings to the city by 99% and allowing the city of Crescent City to add 1,500 water and sewer hookups generating $7,500,000 in revenue to the local economy.

Locally Made

Rumiano Cheese Company milk comes from dairies within a 90-mile radius, therefore, reducing the carbon dioxide output from its milk trucks to the environment and limiting its use of fossil fuels.

Whey Protein Concentrate-80% Plant

In January 2011 Rumiano Cheese Company finished building its WPC-80% plant to utilize the protein out of its whey stream. The dryer utilizes a boiler flue gas heat recovery system, which saves 43% of the energy needed to heat the dryer. The 80% protein is sold in bulk as an ingredient or non-meat protein substitute.

Water Recirculation Pumps

Vacuum pumps run 12 hours per day, 6 days per week using a constant stream of water as a cooling mechanism. To lower the amount of daily water used in production, Rumiano Cheese Company installed the first of its kind water recirculation reservoirs reducing its demand by 1,347,840 gallons per year. Water recirculation also occurs on the vats and the boilers taking the condensation from the steam after cooking the cheese and reintroducing it back into the steam line to be used again for heating.

Energy Efficient Lights

Rumiano Cheese Company has just completed an overhaul of its lighting system in both of its facility saving 100,000 kWh per year on electricity.

Short Commutes

All employees of Rumiano Cheese Company live in close proximity to work. Many of our employees even ride bicycles rather than drive! This saves money on fuel costs and reduces our impact on the environment.

Cardboard Recycling & Bailing

Approximately 65% of the cardboard used in Rumiano products comes from recycled stock. In addition, our company recycles 72,000 lbs. of cardboard per year using cardboard bailers.

Recycled Pallets

Many pallets are reused for shipping cheese, but those that are not acceptable for reuse are sent to the box company to be repaired and used again.

Recycling Old Cheeses

Rumiano Cheese Company recycles old cheese by sending it to Glenn County Vector Control for feeding mosquito fish. Mosquito fish are raised in ponds and are then introduced into insect breeding areas as a biological form of insect control rather than the use of harmful pesticides. Mosquito fish are considered to be the most efficient, effective, and environmentally sensitive means of insect control.

Plastic Bags

An estimated 24% of the material used in plastic bags comes from recycled material.

Recycle Plastic Drums

Plastic 55-gallon drums are cleaned and sold or returned for deposit at the vendor’s location.
