Holiday16: Merry Monte Cristo Party Poppers

  • 8oz Softened Cream Cheese
  • 2tbsp Dijon Mustard
  • 1tsp Fresh Thyme Leaves - Chopped
  • 1/8tsp Ground Nutmeg
  • Several Pinches of Salt and Pepper - Divided
  • 4oz Deli Honey Ham - Chopped
  • 4oz Deli Honey Turkey - Chopped
  • 2/3cup All Purpose Flower
  • 1/3cup Sweetened Dried Cranberries
  • 14oz Rumiano Swiss Cheese - Shredded
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 2cup Panko Bread Crumbs
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Powdered Sugar

Meanwhile, place the Swiss cheese onto a large plate. Microwave on high for 25 seconds. Repeat 2-3 more times or until melted & smooth. Drain off any excess grease. Allow cheese to cool until cool enough to handle, yet still pliable. Once cool, pull off roughly 1 inch balls of cheese. Flatten in your hand & wrap around the cream cheese mixture, pinching edges to seal. Reheat Swiss at additional 10 second intervals if necessary. Place the flour in a small bowl & stir in a pinch of salt & pepper. Place the eggs in another bowl & beat well. In a third bowl, stir together the panko & another pinch of salt & pepper. Dip the cheese balls into the flour, then eggs, then panko. Allow to dry for 10 minutes on a wire rack. Pour 3 inches of oil into a deep saucepan & heat to 350 degrees F. Fry cheese balls for 30 seconds per side or until golden brown. Drain on a paper towel lined plate. Dust with powdered sugar & serve. Yield: 16 poppers, 1 per serving
