Just Label It Campaign

Written by Owen Rumiano, Posted in Sustainability

Do you agree with a half million Americans that GMO products need labeling?

Just Label It Campaign

The "Just Label It!" campaign is a collective effort by the American people supporting the labeling of genetically engineered foods. According to the Just Label It campaign website, polls by MSNBC, ABC News, and Washington Post have all suggested that over 90% of the American public believe genetically modified organisms (GMO's) in our food must be labeled; however the FDA is yet to act. Of the many reasons Americans want GE foods labeled, the most common and outstanding is the right to know what they are eating and how it affects them.

Rumiano Brothers' History

Written by Owen Rumiano, Posted in History

A legacy of quality, service, and perseverance.

Rumiano Brothers' History

The values and innovation of the Rumiano Cheese Company have roots that go back almost a century. The first generation of Rumiano's to emigrate to the United States, brothers Fred, Richard and John held the belief that the hardships of life were conquerable by keeping dedicated values of work ethic in mind. These brothers had a dream to become prosperous and successful, living up to the ideology of the "American Dream." It began with an attempt at gold mining outside of Sacramento, California, in Amador County. The struggling brothers were about 50 years too late, as the California gold-rush had already reaped the benefits of gold mining. They decided their time would be better spent in the San Francisco ship yards during World War I. Richard later married Leontin Ray in San Francisco. Shortly after, the brothers were persuaded to move to Willows, California, about 100 miles north of Sacramento.

The Cheese Must Arrive on Time

Written by Owen Rumiano, Posted in History, Our Cheese

The Values of Hard Work

The Cheese Must Arrive on Time

Perhaps the most valuable pearl of wisdom I've learned growing up was, work hard. I've definitely attempted to keep this mindset alive to some degree. Around the age of eleven or twelve, my dad, John Rumiano (VP of Rumiano Cheese), was unloading trucks multiple nights a week. When Tuesday night came around, my twin brother Raymond and I would look forward to "helping" him load and unload trucks -- although our size restricted helping him.

Dedication to Sustainability

Artisan Cheesemaker Compliment ~ Stefanie Angstadt

Dedication to Sustainability

"As an artisan cheese maker, I was interested in visiting Rumiano's production facility in Crescent City.  I was blown away by the company's dedication to sustainability in all of its practices from A to Z.  Theirs is a system that strives to eliminate waste, find ways to convert its waste outputs into inputs, improve energy efficiency in all of its processes and promote fair practices in the industry.  The company has as much emphasis on reducing its ecological footprint as it does on producing high quality cheeses.  One can see this simply by walking through the facility - it's refreshing to visit a production room where everyone takes pride in what they are creating.  From Rumiano's recent development of its waste water treatment facility for reuse of our most precious resource, to its local dairy milk procurement practices, to its conversion of the whey biproduct (in a normal facility, this is waste or livestock feed) into nourishing protein for human consumption, to its water heating process that increases energy efficiency, Rumiano Cheese Co. is a true closed-loop production system.  What's most remarkable is that these efficiencies are self-driven; they seem to be part of a larger vision towards preserving the ecological systems on which the company will depend far into the future."

Why Rumiano Supports Pasture-Based Dairies

Healthy Benefits of Grass-Fed Dairy

The great health benefits and top quality of grass-fed dairy are no surprise to the team at Rumiano Cheese Company. We use locally sourced milk from pasture-raised cows for all of our dairy products. (Read more about Our Farms to learn all the details on that.)

Jo Robinson's article Super Natural Milk provides great examples of just why we're so committed to our top-quality dairy ingredients. Grass-fed milk has more of the balanced EFAs (essential fatty acids), beneficial fats, beta-carotene, and vitamins A and E—all elements that keep our bodies in healthy balance!

Rumiano Verified as First Non-GMO Cheese

We are proud to announce that our entire organic cheese line, organic butter, and organic WPC-80% are the first in the world to achieve Non-GMO Project Verification. Our family-owned business has been producing all natural, grass–fed, rBST-free, kosher, real California cheese for over 90 years and is California’s oldest family-owned cheese company.

The Non-GMO Project, a non-profit organization created by U.S and Canadian natural and organic products companies, offers consumers a non-GMO choice for organic and natural products that are produced without genetic engineering or recombinant DNA technologies. The Non-GMO Project verifies all types of products. More information is available at nongmoproject.org.

“As a company that has built its reputation and success on making the highest quality and purest cheese products, being the first Non-GMO Project Verified organic cheese company is a real feather in our cap,” says Joby Rumiano, fourth-generation owner of Rumiano Cheese. “We are committed to providing our customers with not only the best tasting cheese, but also products that are produced in the most sustainable, humane and environmentally conscious manner.”
