Non-GMO Month is Here!

It's October, and that means it's Non-GMO Month! The air is thick with the smell of falling leaves and, you guessed it, election time. One proposition that is getting a lot of attention this year is California's Prop 37 which proposes the labeling of any and all genetically modified food retail products. As the world's first Non-GMO Verified Cheese we are participating in Non-GMO Month with a blog series about Non-GMO's and will be sharing with you ideas on how you can participate.

What are GMO's?

non-gmoGMOs are "genetically modified organisms". Organisms that have been genetically altered through gene splicing. This technique is also known as "genetic engineering" or GE. DNA from different species are merged, creating combinations that do not naturally occur in nature. GMOs are engineered with the intention of creating plants that are tolerant to drought, disease and pesticides which in turn will create higher yields. It has not yet been proven that the production of GMO's are meeting these goals, however more and more evidence is leading to the conclusion that GMO's are creating health problems in humans and livestock and contributing to environmental damage.

For example, a genetically engineered tomato now has the ability to grow in cold weather using antifreeze genes found in the winter flounder and is refered to as the "fish tomato."

Non-GMO Month is Almost Here!

Did you know October is Non-GMO Month?

Non-GMO Month is Almost Here!

October is right around the corner and in the organic and natural food industry it signifies the beginning of "Non-GMO Month," sponsored by the Non-GMO Project. The third-annual "Non-GMO Month" was created to bring awareness to the issues of genetically modified or transgenic organisms in today's food system. It is hoped that this month will encourage more studies to provide more evidence that genetically modified crops -- and even animals, e.g. transgenic salmon discussed in this NPR segment -- are unsafe to eat.

Although GMO's have been in market since the early 1990s, there have been few studies with proper long-term testing of GMOs. Without long term tests, there are no guarantees that transgenic foods are in fact safe for our bodies and our environment.

Hybridized Grass Produces Cyanide, Kills 15 of 18 Cows

Has human induced hybridization caused deadly consequences?

Hybridized Grass Produces Cyanide, Kills 15 of 18 Cows

A KEYE TV (Austin, TX) report on Tuesday, June 26, stated fifteen head of cattle dropped dead after grazing for a short period in the recently drought-ridden pasture of a "conventionally cross-bred" version of Bermuda grass. Owner Jerry Abel, in Elgin, Texas just east of Austin, says "he's been using the fields for cattle grazing and hay for 15 years." Tifton 85, the lush grass planted in this pasture, is very high in protein and designed to better feed livestock and supposedly withstand weather fluctuations. However, the grass caused all fifteen head of cattle to mysteriously die. An autopsy later showed that the grass spontaneously began releasing cyanide when ingested. It is speculated that a severe drought in Texas during 2011 is what caused the grass to become "stressed" and release prussic acid.

Rumiano Cheese Company: The Organic Verified Non-GMO Cheese

An inside look at the Non-GMO Project and becoming verified non-GMO

Rumiano Cheese Company: The Organic Verified Non-GMO Cheese

Written in collaboration with Joby Rumiano

The Non-GMO Project is an organization created to bring awareness to the ever-growing market of genetically engineered foods in the United States. It is America's only third-party verification for the production of non-GMO (genetically modified organism) food products. This nonprofit's mission is simple; they are committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products, educating consumers, and providing verified non-GMO choices.

The Non-GMO Project began with natural food retailers who were interested in having readily available information on the genetically modified foods America was consuming and the potential risks of doing so. The organization pushed for the labeling of genetically modified organisms in foods and became the only third-party verification program for non-GMO products. In 2008, the program added the first products to the verified non-GMO lists and has been growing ever since.

The list of verified non-GMO products includes everything from soy milk to body lotion, but until 2011 there were no verified cheese products. Because of our interest in supplying a nutritious and healthy product, Rumiano Cheese Company, after insuring that all of the ingredients in the supply chain in the production of our cheese were non-GMO, went on to verify that the feed the dairy cows were consuming was non-GMO as well. As a result of these efforts, Rumiano cheese became the first ever organic verified non-GMO cheese in the world.

An inside look at Rumiano Cheese

Video of VP John Rumiano on the World's first Organic Non-GMO Cheese

We have just released our latest video highlighting the Rumiano Cheese Company's production process. First, John Rumiano, Vice President, passionately discusses the production attributes of Rumiano's conventional and organic verified non-GMO cheese. He explains how the damp coastal weather of Crescent City, California -- where all Rumiano milk is produced -- allows the Rumiano Cheese Company to make some of the finest possible dairy products in the world. He also notes the importance and pride in being the world's first verified non-GMO cheese. Secondly, John explains that the cheese Rumiano produces has always been the way it is today. We have always used wholesome grass-fed milk and an organic production process; the only difference being, Rumiano Cheese is now verified organic and non-GMO (which is the first of its kind). Finally, the video encompasses the love that each party has for the process in making Rumiano Cheese. The dairy farmers love their animals, the same as the Rumiano Cheese Company loves their cheese, and because of their combined passion, a quality product is made.
