GMO Labeling Laws to Protect Consumers

US Senate Votes to Defeat HR 1599

During Non-GMO Month in October 2015, we shared with you a blog post about H.R. 1599 - Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 otherwise known by it's opponents as the DARK Act - Deny American the Right to Know. In short, this legislation would preempt all state and local legislation and prevent states from passing GMO labeling laws. The House of Representatives voted in favor of this legislaion in July of 2015 and it was passed to Congress for a vote last fall. For many months, we waited eagerly to hear how the Senate was going to vote on this issue.  Last week, we got word that the Senate finally cast their vote and they actually defeated the bill.

US Senate to Vote on H.R. 1599 Soon

As you may know, October is Non-GMO Month.  Started in 2010 by the Non-GMO Project, this month is dedicated to continued education about genetically modified food and to help consumers better understand their food system. Here at Rumiano Cheese we are proud to have been the very first cheese company in the world to receive the Non-GMO Project Verification on our Rumiano Family Organic line of cheese.

The last few years for Non-GMO Month, we have shared with you the November ballot initiatives around the country that would make GMO labeling possible on the state and local level.  Many states have been successful in passing GE labeling bills and some even passed mandatory labeling legislation including Maine, Vermont and Connecticut.  The Center for Food Safety has a great map that shows the latest here>>

Rumiano Cheese Supports Northern California's Humboldt County Measure P

Milk for Rumiano Cheese comes from multi-generational family owned dairies in Del Norte and Humboldt counties in Northern California. Coastal mountain ranges and happy Jersey cows yield some of the cleanest milk on Earth and keeping the coastline pristine is incredibly important to us. Dairy is the largest agricultural export of Humboldt County, however fruit trees and vineyards have become more common in the valleys to the East. Fortunately, the small amount of agriculture in Humboldt County is not typically genetically modified, but there is an effort to prevent GMO crops from gaining a hold in the nearly untouched North Coast.

Bees, the fuzzy pollinators that instill fear in children while simultaneously creating one of the most delicious sweets on earth, are undeniably important to humanity. The simple process of pollinating isn't quite as simple without our buzzing friends and humans are yet to find an efficient and practical alternative.

Wondering What the Current Status of the Non-GMO Movement is?

Even though the California labeling initiative, Prop 37, did not pass on the 2012 ballot, it has made a great impact on the Non-GMO Movement. Following in California's footsteps, states across the U.S. are campaigning for labeling laws of their own. But what impact will this new legislation have on existing standards and organizations? We talked with Courtney Pineau, Assistant Director of the Non-GMO Project, to get a better perspective on the Non-GMO movement and to find out what what's next.

Educate yourself on the upcoming measure that will require the labeling of GMO foods

California's Prop 37 - Labeling GMOs

Over the last month, there has been an appropriately abundant amount of Non-GMO related content on the Internet because October is Non-GMO Month. This year in California, Non-GMO Month couldn't have come at a better time. On the November ballot is Prop 37, California's Non-GMO related proposition requiring the labeling of genetically modified foods. There is plenty of information available to confuse and even mislead the voters out there. We won't tell you how to vote -- because we don't like being told what to do either -- but we will give you the tools you need to make an educated decision that fits what's best for you and your family.

On the ballot, Proposition 37 is described as:

"Requires labeling of food sold to consumers made from plants or animals with genetic material changed in specified ways. Prohibits marketing such food, or other processed food, as 'natural.' Provides exemptions."

In addition to The Future of Food, we encourage you to check out the list we have created on our Resources page and share them with your friends and family.

seeds-of-deception
